Plaza San Martín is a downtown green space in Córdoba, Argentina, with roots reaching back to 1577, when it served as the colonial center for fairs, festivals, and bullfights. The plaza received its modern landscape design in 1901 from Franco-Argentinian designer Carlos León Thays, who introduced diverse plantings to the square. Since 1916, an equestrian bronze monument to José de San Martín, Argentina's liberator, has anchored the plaza, its base adorned with bronze bas-reliefs commemorating his liberation campaigns. Redesigned in 1934 by architect Francisco Salamone, the square is surrounded by a remarkable architectural heritage spanning from Spanish colonial structures—including the Cathedral and Cabildo—to nineteenth and twentieth-century buildings that define the character of downtown Córdoba.
