Poblenou Cemetery, also called the East Cemetery or General Cemetery, lies in the Poblenou neighbourhood of Barcelona. Its first site dates from 1775, outside the city's perimeter wall. After Napoleon's troops destroyed it in 1813, the Italian architect Antonio Ginesi rebuilt it with egalitarian terraces of niches at the front and monuments and mausolea for wealthy merchants and manufacturers at the rear. Its best-known sculpture, The Kiss of Death (1930), shows a winged skeleton kissing a young man's body above the grave of Josep Llaudet Soler.
