The Port Said Lighthouse, designed by François Coignet for the Khedive Ismail, was completed in 1869 just one week before the inauguration of the Suez Canal. Standing 56 metres high with an octagonal tower, the structure was built to guide ships navigating the newly opened canal. An important architectural landmark in Port Said, Egypt, the lighthouse exemplifies the evolution of nineteenth-century architecture in the city and remains a significant tourist attraction.
