Powis Castle stands near Welshpool in Powys, Wales, a medieval castle that became a grand country house and the seat of the Herbert family, earls of Powis. Built in the 13th century by the Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn rather than a Norman baron, it was transformed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries and set within one of the very few surviving British Baroque gardens. The castle and gardens are cared for by the National Trust, and the building is Grade I listed.
