The Presidio of San Francisco is a park and former U.S. Army post at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. New Spain established it as a fortified site on September 17, 1776, and it later passed to Mexico in 1820 and to the United States in 1848. Transferred to the National Park Service in 1994, it sits at the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and is a National Historic Landmark.
