Qal'at Ja'bar is a castle on the left bank of Euphrates Lake in Raqqa Governorate, Syria. Its hilltop site, once overlooking the Euphrates Valley, is now an island in Lake Assad, reachable only by an artificial causeway. The hill may already have been fortified in the 7th century, but the present structures are mainly the work of Nur ad-Din, who rebuilt the castle from 1168 onward. Built of brick and stone, it has been excavated and restored since 1965.
