Qasr al-Azraq ("Blue Fortress") is a large desert castle on the outskirts of the town of Azraq, roughly 100 km east of Amman in Jordan's Zarqa Governorate. Its strategic value came from the nearby Azraq oasis, the only water source in a vast desert region. Built largely of locally quarried basalt, which darkens it compared with neighboring buildings, it took its present form under an extensive Ayyubid renovation and expansion in the 13th century.
