The Quadrangular Mardakan Fortress, also called the Great Mardakan Castle, stands in the Mardakan settlement of the Khazar raion in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was built in the 12th century under Shirvanshah Akhsitan I, in the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school. Its courtyard measures 24 by 20 metres, and a 22-metre tower rises within it, while semi-circular blind towers reinforce the outer walls. In 2001 it was included in UNESCO's World Heritage Reserve List alongside other Caspian coastal defence structures.
