Perched on Devil's Peak near Table Mountain in Cape Town, the Rhodes Memorial is a monumental structure designed by architect Herbert Baker and completed in 1912. Styled after an ancient Greek temple, it commemorates Cecil John Rhodes, the English-born mining magnate and founder of De Beers who served as Prime Minister of the British Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. Rhodes played a significant, though contested, role in British imperial expansion across southern Africa during the late nineteenth century. The memorial's prominent placement and grand classical design reflect the stature once accorded to Rhodes, though the monument has become increasingly controversial in contemporary South Africa as a symbol of colonial legacy.
