Built in Utrecht in 1924, the Rietveld Schröder House is a pioneering De Stijl residence designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld in close collaboration with his client, Truus Schröder-Schräder, who commissioned a home notably free of interior walls. Schröder-Schräder's vision for the house—one that would dissolve boundaries between inside and outside and reject bourgeois conventions of hierarchy and containment—aligned with the progressive ideals both designer and patron shared, which extended to their commitment to openness in family life and emotional authenticity. The result is considered one of the finest examples of De Stijl architecture, arguably its only fully realized embodiment. Schröder-Schräder inhabited the house until her death in 1985. Now restored and operated as a museum by the Centraal Museum, the building has been protected as a Rijksmonument since 1976 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
