The Rock Island Arsenal occupies 946 acres on Arsenal Island in the Mississippi River, between Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. Its architecture is Greek Revival. The army authorized Fort Armstrong here in 1816 and later established a foundry and armory in the 1880s. Today it is the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the United States. The site is a National Historic Landmark, designated in 1988, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
