The Rothko Chapel is a non-denominational chapel in Houston, Texas, founded by John and Dominique de Menil and completed in 1971. Its octagon inscribed in a Greek cross was largely shaped by Mark Rothko, whose fourteen paintings in varying hues of black serve as the chapel's major work of modern art. The building sits on the University of Saint Thomas campus and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
