The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud stands in the village of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, near Chinon, in the former Duchy of Anjou. Founded in 1101 by the itinerant preacher Robert of Arbrissel, it became the centre of the Order of Fontevraud, a network of double monasteries housing men and women in separate quarters under a single abbess. Built in the Gothic style, the abbey is a classified historical monument, and it was the burial place of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart at the end of the 12th century.
