The Royal Castle in Warsaw stands in the Castle Square at the entrance to the Old Town. Begun in 1598 to designs attributed to Giovanni Battista Trevano, it served as the official residence of several Polish monarchs and is now a state museum. The Constitution of 3 May 1791 was drafted here by the Four-Year Parliament. Destroyed in the Second World War, it was reconstructed between 1971 and 1984 and regained its original appearance.
