The Royal Exhibition Building stands in Carlton Gardens at the north-eastern edge of Melbourne's central business district, Victoria, Australia. Built in 1879–1880 to a Neoclassical design by Joseph Reed, it was created for the Melbourne International Exhibition. It later hosted the 1888 Centennial International Exhibition and the 1901 Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia, and in 2004 it became the first building in Australia to receive UNESCO World Heritage status.
