The Royal Palace of Brussels is the official palace of the King and Queen of the Belgians, standing in the centre of the Belgian capital opposite Brussels Park across the Place des Palais. Although it serves as the monarch's official seat for state business and receptions rather than a residence, the royal family lives at the Royal Palace of Laeken in northern Brussels. Its first nucleus dates from the end of the 18th century, on ground once occupied by the medieval Palace of Coudenberg, and its façade was built after 1900 on the initiative of King Leopold II. It is a protected monument.
