The Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans in the Doubs department of France is an eighteenth-century industrial complex designed by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and commissioned during the reign of Louis XVI (1774–92). A pioneering achievement in industrial architecture, it represents one of the first major applications of Enlightenment ideals to manufacturing, elevating the architectural quality of a working saltworks to rival that of palaces and religious buildings. The facility produced salt by boiling brine heated with firewood from the nearby Forest of Chaux, and was connected by a 21-kilometer pipeline to the saltworks of Salins-les-Bains, an extension added to the World Heritage designation in 2009. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, the complex stands as a classified historical monument and a landmark of rational industrial design.
