Completed in 1933 in Belgrade's Stari Grad district, the Russian Center of Science and Culture (known colloquially as the Russian House) was designed by Russian architect Vasily Baumgarten as a cultural institution for the émigré community that had fled to Yugoslavia following the October Revolution of 1917. The building synthesizes Russian Revival and Neoclassical architectural styles, reflecting both its cultural purpose and the artistic sophistication of its architect. Established with the support of King Alexander and prominent Serbian figures including Patriarch Varnava and scholar Aleksandar Belić, it opened on 9 April 1933 as a center to promote Russian language and culture. After World War II, it was repurposed as the Home of Soviet Culture before being renamed the Russian Center of Science and Culture in 1994, a designation it retains today as one of forty-four Russian cultural centers worldwide.
