Saint Michael's Castle, also called the Mikhailovsky Castle or Engineers' Castle, is a former royal residence in the historic centre of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Vincenzo Brenna and Vasily Bazhenov built it for Emperor Paul I in 1797–1801, mixing French Classicism, Italian Renaissance and Gothic motifs so that each side looks different. Built around an octagonal courtyard and ringed by water, it stood on an artificial island reached only by drawbridges, reflecting the emperor's fear of assassination.
