Salasel Castle is a historical fortress crowning a mountain in the island city of Shushtar, Khuzestan Province, Iran, with origins extending to the Achaemenid era. Constructed of stone and lime, the castle reflects architectural influences spanning Sasanian, Safavid, and Qajar periods. The structure comprises multiple levels and features secret tunnels alongside defensive fortifications including walls and towers. In 2009, it was inscribed as part of the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System on UNESCO's World Heritage List, marking Iran's tenth cultural heritage site on the United Nations register and forming part of a broader ensemble that encompasses twelve historical bridges, dams, canals, and buildings.
