San Michele Arcangelo, one of four major churches facing Piazza Dante in Naples, began construction around 1620 as Santa Maria della Provvidenza before undergoing significant 18th-century renovation. Architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro led the reconstruction, with Giuseppe Astarita contributing expansions; the present Rococo facade reflects this period of transformation. The interior preserves notable artworks including a St Michael by Giuseppe Marullo and religious paintings by Vaccaro himself, while 18th-century ceiling frescoes by Lucio Stabile ornament the space. The sacristy houses a 1758 marble font by Nicola Tagliacozzi Canale and walnut pews from 1772 by Nunzia Tancredi, the latter bearing marble relief panels of the Adoration of the Shepherds and Adoration of the Magi. After a lengthy closure, the church reopened in October 2010.
