Sanahin Monastery is an Armenian monastery founded in the 10th century in the Lori Province of Armenia, near the village of Alaverdin. Its name translates from Armenian as "this one is older than that one," a claim presumably staked against the neighbouring Haghpat Monastery, situated some three kilometers to the east across a deep river gorge. The two monastic complexes, separated by the Debed river's tributary and set on a dissected plateau, are visually prominent to one another and share considerable architectural and cultural similarities. Together they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sanahin complex belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church and contains numerous khachkars—intricately carved stones bearing elaborate cross designs—along with bishop gravesites scattered throughout its grounds, attracting an increasing number of visitors drawn by the site's architectural beauty and its place within Armenian religious heritage.
