The Sanctuary of Christ the King is a Catholic monument and shrine in Almada, Portugal, overlooking Lisbon and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Designed by António Lino in a modern style, its colossal 28-metre statue of Christ was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument. Inaugurated on 17 May 1959, it was erected to express gratitude that Portugal was spared the direct destructive effects of the Second World War.
