Santa Maria del Popolo is a minor basilica and titular church in Rome, run by the Augustinian order. It stands on the north side of Piazza del Popolo, between the Pincian Hill and the Porta del Popolo, a gate in the Aurelian Wall. Its position at the start of the Via Flaminia made it the first church most travellers encountered on entering the city. The church holds works by Raphael, Caravaggio, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pinturicchio. Its Renaissance architecture is attributed to Baccio Pontelli, and it is part of Italy's national heritage.
