Santa Maria della Spina is a small Gothic church in Pisa, Italy, erected around 1230 in the Pisan Gothic style and enlarged after 1325. Originally called Santa Maria di Pontenovo after a nearby bridge, it takes its name from a thorn traditionally held to be part of Christ's crown of thorns, brought there in 1333. In 1871 the church was dismantled and rebuilt on a higher level to escape water seeping from the Arno, a restoration John Ruskin criticised after visiting in 1872.
