Santa Maria in Cosmedin is a minor basilica in the Ripa rione of Rome, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Founded in the sixth century as a diaconia in a district settled by Greek immigrants, it was expanded in the eighth century and given its bell tower in the twelfth. Baroque additions were removed between 1894 and 1899, restoring the exterior to its twelfth-century form. Its narthex houses the Bocca della Verità, and the church serves the Melkite Greek Catholic community of Rome.
