Santa Maria sopra Minerva is a minor basilica and one of the major Dominican churches in Rome, standing on Piazza della Minerva, one block east of the Pantheon. Begun in 1370, it is the only surviving original Gothic church building in Rome, where most medieval churches were remodelled during the Baroque era. Behind a restrained Renaissance façade, its vaulting was painted blue with gilded stars and red ribbing during a 19th-century Neo-Gothic restoration.
