São Bento Palace in Lisbon's Estrela district is the seat of the Assembly of the Republic, Portugal's parliament, and has housed national parliaments since 1834. Begun in 1598 as a Benedictine monastery, it was damaged in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and became national property when monasteries were dissolved in 1834. A major fire in 1895 led to changes that produced its current façade. The building is a National Monument of Portugal, and the Prime Minister's official residence lies within its grounds.
