Scarborough Castle is a former medieval royal fortress on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. Fortifications for a wooden castle were built in the 1130s, and the present stone castle, built of limestone, dates from the 1150s. Once a key defence of the Yorkshire coast, it has been a ruin since the sieges of the English Civil War and is now a scheduled monument of national importance.
