Located in West Hollywood, California, the Schindler House (1922) is a modernist residence designed by architect Rudolph M. Schindler that radically reimagined domestic living through its absence of conventional rooms. Originally conceived as a cooperative live/work space for two families, the house eschewed traditional partitions in favor of an open floor plan that dissolved boundaries between interior and exterior. Its innovative use of concrete walls and sliding canvas panels—industrial materials novel to residential design at the time—allowed the external environment to flow into the living spaces. This experimental approach established an influential precedent for California modern architecture and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
