Schloss Herten is a moated castle in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, whose foundations incorporate 14th-century elements, though the visible structures date to the 16th and 17th centuries. Built by Coesfeld architect Henric de Suer and his son Johann for the families Stecke and Nesselrode, the late Gothic complex originally stood as a residence until after the First World War. Subsidence from mining in the surrounding Ruhr industrial region caused severe structural damage, threatening collapse until radical restoration by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe between 1974 and 1989 secured its preservation. Now declared a cultural heritage monument, the castle serves as a cultural venue hosting concerts and events, while its surrounding English landscape garden welcomes visitors for recreation.
