The Shahrestan Bridge is the oldest bridge spanning the Zayandeh River in Iran, located in Isfahan County. Its stone foundations originate in the Sasanian era (224–651 C.E.), with the superstructure renovated during the Buyid period in the 10th century and again under Seljuk rule in the 11th century, reflecting successive waves of Persian architectural tradition. The structure measures 107.8 metres long and 5.2 metres wide, employing two parabolic curves—one vertical to elevate the centre, the other horizontal to strengthen it against river currents. Two tiers of pointed arches compose the bridge: thirteen large arches span the river itself, complemented by eight smaller nested arches. Constructed from adobe, brick, stone, and plaster, the bridge represents a synthesis of Sasanian, Buyid, Seljuk, and later Safavid architectural influences. Recently, the Zayandeh River has been diverted southward to create an artificial lake around the bridge, protecting this Iranian National Heritage site from ongoing deterioration.
