Shanhai Pass is a castle and city gate in Shanhaiguan District, Qinhuangdao, Hebei, on the east bank of the Shi River, marking the eastern end of the Great Wall of China. Begun in 1381 during the early Ming dynasty, it commands the narrowest choke point of the Liaoxi Corridor, the only easily traversable land route between North and Northeast China. Known as the "Greatest Pass Under Heaven," it is a popular tourist site and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
