The Siegessäule, or Victory Column, is a Neoclassical war memorial in Berlin's Bezirk Mitte, designed by Heinrich Strack and inaugurated on 2 September 1873. It was first conceived to mark Prussia's victory over Denmark in the Second Schleswig War, but later Prussian triumphs over Austria and France gave it a new purpose. A bronze figure of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, designed by Friedrich Drake, raises it to 67 metres. Berliners nicknamed it Goldelse.
