The Smederevo Fortress is a medieval fortified city in Smederevo, Serbia, that served as the temporary capital of Serbia in the Middle Ages. Despot Đurađ Branković ordered its construction between 1427 and 1430, and the Ottoman Empire, which took the city in 1459, further fortified it. The fortress withstood several Ottoman sieges, though it was heavily damaged by explosions and bombing during World War II. It was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979 and placed on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2010.
