The Smithsonian Institution Building, commonly called the Smithsonian Castle, stands on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and houses the institution's administrative offices and information center. Designed by James Renwick Jr., it was built as the first Smithsonian museum building. Constructed of Seneca red sandstone in a Norman Revival style drawing on 12th-century late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs, it was completed in 1855 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
