Located in Banská Bystrica, the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising is a brutalist structure completed in 1969, designed by architect Dušan Kuzma. Founded in 1955, the museum commemorates the Slovak National Uprising of August 1944, an organized military resistance effort launched from the city to oppose German occupation and the Nazi-collaborationist government of Jozef Tiso. The museum documents both the Slovak State's wartime history from 1939 to 1945 and the resistance movement, which was represented primarily by the Democratic Party alongside smaller contingents of Social Democrats and Communists. Though the uprising was largely defeated by German forces, guerrilla operations persisted until Soviet, Czechoslovak, and Romanian armies liberated Slovak territory in 1945.
