Sopoćani Monastery stands near the source of the Raška River, about 15 kilometres west of Novi Pazar in Serbia, in the Ras region that was the centre of the medieval Serbian state. Built from 1259 to 1270 as an endowment of King Stefan Uroš I, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1979 together with Stari Ras.
