The Springfield Armory, formally the United States Armory and Arsenal at Springfield, stood in Springfield, Massachusetts, as the nation's primary center for manufacturing military firearms from 1777 until it closed in 1968. It was the first federal armory and among the first factories in the United States devoted to weapons production, and it pioneered interchangeable parts and assembly-line mass production. The site is now the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark that holds the world's largest collection of historic American firearms.
