Built in 1915 in the rural community of Paxton near Dallas, South Dakota, St. John's Catholic Church exemplifies the Carpenter Gothic style with its characteristic steep roof, lancet windows, belfry, and entrance portal. The church closed in 1973 but was transferred a year later to former parishioners committed to its preservation and that of its adjoining cemetery—now the only surviving structures from the vanished community of Paxton. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
