Built between 1592 and 1617 as a Jesuit church, it is a three-aisled basilica with a wide nave and is considered one of the first Baroque churches in Poland, modeled on the Chiesa del Gesù in Rome. It became a cathedral in the early 19th century and the archdiocesan cathedral in 1992.
