St Magnus Cathedral stands in Kirkwall, the main town of Orkney, off the north coast of mainland Scotland. Begun in 1137, it is a Romanesque building with later Gothic additions, constructed in sandstone, and it is the oldest cathedral in Scotland and the most northerly in the United Kingdom. Originally a Roman Catholic cathedral, it is now a Church of Scotland parish church and holds Category A listed status.
