St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche) stands on the highest point of Lübeck's old town island in Germany, near the town hall and market. Built between 1265 and 1352 in north German Brick Gothic style, it is a three-aisled basilica with a twin-tower westwork and the tallest brick vault in the world. Almost destroyed by bombing in 1942, it was reconstructed between 1947 and 1959. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is called the "mother church of brick Gothic."
