St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) stands in the Mitte district of central Leipzig, Germany, and is a heritage monument in Saxony. Begun in Romanesque style in 1165, it was converted into a Gothic hall church in the 16th century, with Baroque elements such as the tower added in the 18th century. It became a centre of peaceful revolt against communist rule through the Monday Demonstrations of 1989.
