St. Nicholas Church in Wismar, Germany, is a monumental brick Gothic structure begun in 1381 and completed in 1487, originally built to serve the city's maritime community of sailors and fishermen. Rising to 64 meters, it stands as the second-highest brick basilica in the world, surpassed only by St. Mary's in Lübeck, upon whose design it was modeled. Among the finest expressions of medieval brick architecture in northern Germany, St. Nicholas dominates Wismar's skyline alongside two other great churches—St. Mary's and St. George's. The building was designated an architectural heritage monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and, as part of Wismar's historic center, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.
