Tankar Lighthouse stands on the island of Tankar in the Bothnian Bay, off Finland's west coast outside Kokkola, serving the shipping lane to the Port of Kokkola about 15 kilometres away. Built in 1888 and 29.6 metres tall, it is a Cultural Heritage Site of National Significance. Its designer is unknown, though one theory credits the Eiffel Engineering Company, and its iron structure may be of German origin. The light originally burned oil, but its conversion to electricity in 1961 greatly extended its range.
