Situated in southeastern central Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is a complex of imperial religious buildings that served as the ceremonial center for Ming and Qing emperors performing annual rites of prayer to Heaven for good harvests and seasonal observances. Rooted in Confucian tradition, the site represents a masterpiece of Chinese architecture and landscape design whose symbolic layout and cosmological principles profoundly influenced architectural and urban planning throughout the Far East for centuries. Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1998, the complex exemplifies the sophisticated integration of religious ritual, philosophical thought, and spatial design that defined imperial Chinese civilization at its height.
