The Tennessee State Capitol stands on a hill at the highest point in downtown Nashville and serves as the seat of Tennessee's government, housing both houses of the General Assembly and the governor's office. Designed by William Strickland of Philadelphia, who considered it his greatest achievement, it was built between 1845 and 1859 and is one of Nashville's most prominent Greek Revival buildings. Constructed largely of nearby limestone, it was one of the first buildings in the United States to use iron as a structural element, and it is one of eleven state capitols without a dome.
