Built in 1890–1891 for John William Schmidt, president of the Indianapolis Brewing Company, this three-story Neo-Jacobean mansion stands at 1410 North Delaware Street in Indianapolis. Constructed of red brick with limestone trim, the house sits on a full basement beneath a hipped slate roof punctuated by multiple gables. Its exterior is distinguished by a wraparound verandah, a square tower, and a porte-cochère. Named after the ancient Greek term for monumental gateways, the house passed to subsequent owner Joseph C. Schaf, president of the American Brewing Company. Since 1923, it has served as headquarters for the Indianapolis Woman's Club and continues to function as a cultural venue and event space managed by the Indianapolis Propylaeum association, which was founded in 1888. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
