Tintagel Castle is a medieval fortification and ruin on the Tintagel peninsula, beside the village of Tintagel in North Cornwall, England. Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall, built a castle there in the 13th century, which later fell into ruin. Excavations have revealed an earlier high-status settlement with Mediterranean trading links, including the outlines of a 5th or early 6th century palace. The site is also long associated with King Arthur, through Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century account of Arthur's conception there.
